Video: Is Jet Surf the future of surfing

It's a fish, It's a boat, It's jet surf! Is this the future of surfing? Is it going to be the next big water sport?

I saw this video about jet surf a few days a go. And I thought it was awesome that the riders/surfers where charging the waves that hard with a look a like wakeboard on a jet motor.

What is jet surf?

Jet surf is an high tech surfboard that is driven by an 2 strokes engine. It is designed by Moto GP and Formula 1 engineers. The jet surf has an carbon fiber hull equipped  is 12,5 kg and 1,80 meters long and 60 centimeter width. The entry-level model is going 55 km/h and the top model jet surf is going 63 km/h tops. I can imagine what it feels like, I think it is like standing on a jetski with only straps on.

Will jet surf be the future of surfing?

It is a new gadget and you can charge the waves same like surfing. You can even time the waves better with the jet surf, because it got an automatic electronic control that is operated manually.

So what Jamie O'Brien is saying that you can use the jet surf on flat waters and if there is a wave you don't have to paddle by yourself. So I think it is got all the benefits, where most surfers are struggling with. Especially on surfspots where there is no swell or the wave period is to short to get an nice wave. Like the Netherlands for instant. I think it is an big step up for people how don't like to do the learning process of surfing. And with the jet surf these people can charge the waves right away.

On the other side does the jet surf take the fun a way of real surfing?

Surfing for me is all about enjoying the ocean and waiting for the perfect wave. And when you catch a wave and stand on your surfboard you feel excited, scared, in control, FREE! And I think the road to the process of surfing: from paddling out, to wait with when a nice wave is coming and paddle hard as you can to catch that wave and surf it, it is the biggest achievement what you can get in surfing. Because after this process you are STOKED!

And is that not more fun, than charging like a madmen over they ocean with a jet surf?

Will jet surf be the new big thing in water sports?

I think it is going to be big hype at first, but on the other hand there will be a hard core of surfers who are against it. Because the jet surf got an engine and that will be not good for  nature and its ocean. And if you don't need an wave how can you call it surfing? A lot of the surfers don't going to get this type of technology and if it can become a sport.

For 9500 euro you can own a jet surf. So that will cut of a big market too. But the jet surf will be an new statement of water sports.
